Eagle
Designed by Judith Mara
Inspired by a painting, designer Judith Mara cut three shades of blue cardstock into small rectangular strips, then adhered them into a wave shape to mimic painted brush strokes. According to Judith, this technique is a bit time-consuming, but well-worth the effort.

- Cut one 1" x 10⅞" rectangle from Red cardstock, and one ¼" x 11½" strip from Light Blue cardstock. Use the border punch to punch evenly spaced slits down the Red rectangle as shown in project photo. Thread the Light Blue rectangle through the slits. Measure 1⅜" in from the left side of White cardstock and vertically adhere the completed rectangle an equal distance from top and bottom edges.
- There are two options for arranging the nine 2¾" x 3½" photos. The first is to measure ½" down from the top edge and 2⅝" in from the left side of the White cardstock and adhere the photos in three rows of three photos each, leaving 1⁄8" between rows. The other option is to create a collage of the nine photos in a photo-editing program and print them out together onto an 8½" x 11" piece of photo paper. Adhere onto White cardstock in the same manner as option 1.

Pattern placement guide for creating the “wave” (pdf format) |
- To create white journaling on a red background, open a new letter-size document in photo-editing program. Select 300 pixels per inch for the resolution, RGB for the color mode, and white for the background color. With the Rectangular Marquee Tool, select an area large enough to accommodate your journaling, and use the Paint Bucket Tool to fill it with the color desired. Click on the Text Tool, change the foreground color to white, and select the typeface and size that you want (12-point bold Stone Sans used here). Type journaling in a new layer over the colored background, inserting an extra space between lines. Print the journaling block onto White cardstock.
- Cut journaling, light blue, medium blue and dark blue cardstocks into ¼"-wide strips. Feed the journaling and different blue cardstock strips through the Create-a-Sticker machine to apply adhesive to the back. Remove the first strip of journaling from the adhesive backing. Cut off the first word of the journaling. Measure 4" down from the top edge and ½" in from the left side of White cardstock and adhere first journaling word. Cut off the second word, and place it next to the first, creating a wavy line across the page. Continue placing words for this first line until you come to about 4" from the right edge.
- Cut strips into various sizes from the different blue cardstocks. Adhere strips in a line above journaling. This line should extend onto the right side of the first layout as shown. Create two more lines of blue card-stock rectangles below the journaling, ending about 3" from the right edge. Alternate one line of journaling and two lines of blue cardstock rectangles until all of the journaling has been adhered to the layout.
- Measure 4½" down from the top edge of the layout and adhere the square photo against the right edge of the page. Glue the date journaling strip onto the top right corner of photo.
- Transfer chipboard letters onto Red cardstock (“EAGLE” used here). Use craft knife to cut around all outside edges. Adhere cardstock letter onto chipboard letters. Use the sandpaper to sand the edges smooth. Adhere the chipboard title along the bottom curve of the wave, overlapping photo as shown in project photo.
