The Barnyard

Designed by Erikia Ghumm
Want to try something that’s uniquely different and just plain fun? Try making your own personal artwork by combining photo images and patterned papers. Designer Erikia Ghumm took this photo about 15 years ago, intending to do a little photo and paper experimenting, but she never got around to it. So the photo stayed put in her box of photos until she saw the Urban Prairie Collection by BasicGrey. She loved the intensity of the color and the patterns sparked her imagination, rescuing the old photo from obscurity. Says Erikia, “I love how surreal the patterned papers make the photo look. It’s like a landscape from a dream.”

What a whimsical way to showcase a prized photo. Erikia scanned and printed a treasured photo onto a transparency into a high-contrast black-and-white photo. She then selected patterned papers to fill in the different areas of the transparency. Decide the order in which the papers need to be adhered onto the transparency. The project shown here added Hayloft patterned paper to the back side of the trees and vines; and Straw patterned paper to the back side of the house trim and fence; Petticoat patterned paper was used to create the house, and Monarch patterned paper (butterfly and bee) to create the sky. Use the light box and pencil to trace the outline of each image or area of the transparency onto patterned papers as listed above. Use the scissors to cut out. Use the Xyron machine to apply adhesive to the front (patterned side) of each image that is to be placed on the back side of the transparency, then apply in the selected order. Use the Xyron machine to apply adhesive to the back side (non-printed) images, then apply to the front of the transparency. Use the scissors to cut out the bird image and small photo of the woman. Adhere the bird image to the top of the fence, and the small photo inside the window frame. Use the circle punches to punch out flowers and randomly adhere onto the vine, referring to project photo for placement. Place into vintage frame and display.
